Winchester Disk (HDD)

In 1973 "IBM" developed the magnetic drive with capacity of 16 KBytes of information; its hard magnetic disk consisted of 30 cylinders with 30 sectors in each one. The drive was given the name "Winchester" by analogy with high performance and 30/30 calibre of a popular automatic rifle. "IBM" practically stopped the production of Winchesters for personal computers having authorized their production to "Hitachi" company. In 2003 "Hitachi" company authorized the production of a number of Winchester disk drives models to a Chinese company "ExcelStor".
